From Intern to Employee: My Personal Journey with Healthcare Pathway Advocates
Updated: Oct 6

Growing Up in the Foothills
Growing up, I was one of those kids. I was lucky enough to spend my childhood in the scenic foothill regions of Amador County, a place defined by natural beauty, close-knit communities, and a distinct lack of nearby options when it came to higher education. If you wanted to find a pathway to college classes, navigate admissions, or map out a future, you quickly realized just how isolated you were. Amador County has historically lacked a traditional physical community college campus within its borders, leaving students to bridge vast geographical gaps just to access basic education and classes.
That isolation isn't just geographical; it heavily impacts economic mobility. When I was 14 years old, my family had to move down to Sacramento simply because my parents couldn't find employment locally. That early reality-that a lack of local opportunity forces families to uproot their lives-left a permanent mark on me. I did not want to leave my home in the foothills.
A New Path Through Bay Valley Tech
Years later, a disability forced me to navigate a complete career pivot. After working for a home improvement contractor as a lead generator in marketing, I needed to redirect my professional trajectory, aiming toward something entirely new. At the time, I felt that traditional college was too expensive and was looking for a different path to a new career. That search led me to Bay Valley Tech.
I started going to Bay Valley Tech not quite knowing what to expect, and with no clear picture of what the final outcome would look like. All I knew was that I had a genuine passion for design and a deep love for colors. Diving into different platforms and software was exhilarating, though it certainly came with its fair share of challenges. I learned how to start small using Photopea, tackled the rigorous and demanding learning curve of Figma, and grew exponentially in my mastery of Canva. By the time I had built several projects in Wix, I felt confident in my skills and was ready to take on more.
Interning With Healthcare Pathway Advocates
That was when the opportunity arose to intern for Healthcare Pathway Advocates, as Irene needed someone to step in and rebuild the website. It was an incredible opportunity- not just an exciting project, but a vital stepping stone. I wanted to avoid any gaps on my resume and make myself significantly more hirable in a brand-new field. Looking back, it was the ultimate win-win situation: a chance to dive headfirst into professional work while helping a mission-driven organization transform its digital presence and also giving me the experience I needed to put on my resume.
Building Digital Infrastructure for a Nonprofit Mission
What began as an opportunity to step in and handle the website quickly evolved into a collaborative rebuilding process. To keep everything professional and aligned, I created a comprehensive brand kit and established clear brand guidelines , because having consistent standards is crucial when working collaboratively.
This project also became a vital mentorship opportunity. While working on the rebuild, I mentored our intern, Isabela, guiding her through the process as she helped with the site while learning and taking instruction firsthand. Together, our primary goal was user experience: ensuring that when parents, students, donors, and job applicants jumped onto the website, they had clear, intuitive options of where to go. The layout had to be completely uncluttered and very easy to navigate so visitors could immediately find the information they needed.
To make that possible, we structured the website to clearly display our partner school districts and the surrounding communities we serve. Behind the scenes, we also incorporated a dedicated student page complete with impact statistics and key numbers, paired directly with an online internship application so prospective students could easily apply.
Additionally, we integrated a streamlined application process specifically for industry leaders looking to get involved, ensuring every pathway, from student enrollment to community partnership, was clear, accessible, and completely on brand.
The Broader Mission: Building Structured Educational and Career Pathways
At the heart of Healthcare Pathway Advocates lies a straightforward mission: breaking down barriers and building structured educational and career pathways. For many individuals, especially those navigating limited local options, finding a clear route forward can be very challenging.
This is why our work matters so much. By establishing clear resources, forging direct community connections, and creating organized systems, the organization provides a dependable bridge. Every structured resource is designed with a single goal in mind: removing resistance and making sure that students looking to build better futures have a clear, structured path to get there.
Paying It Forward: Mentorship and Next-Generation Impact
Stepping into the mentorship role with intern Isabela brought an entirely new dimension to my work with Healthcare Pathway Advocates. Rather than navigating digital projects on my own, I had the opportunity to guide her through the hands-on process of digital design and shared the skills and workflows I had learned along the way. This summer digital design internship turned into a true collaborative partnership, which meant working side-by-side to build up real-world experience.
Watching Isabela Grow
Watching Isabela grow throughout her internship was nothing short of amazing. She really hit the ground running and strengthened the foundation she already had in Canva when she first started. Together, we dove into the Figma course and expanded into all kinds of hands-on projects in Canva, Figma, and Wix. She learned how to structure visual assets while also gaining a firsthand understanding of how a nonprofit operates day-to-day.
By the end of her internship, Isabela had gained the confidence and technical skills to design a logo for her local club. More than that, she now has the full capability to build websites on Wix, a skill she will be putting to use to help her mother launch her very own nonprofit organization. I am honored to have been able to mentor Isabela and watch her take those tools, master them, and turn them into real-world momentum.
Bridging the Classroom and the Real World
Stepping into an internship changes the game by bridging the gap between classroom theory and real-world application. When students dive into hands-on projects and tackle actual day-to-day challenges side-by-side with a mentor, they gain practical knowledge that goes far beyond any textbook. Those real-world experiences build confidence, problem-solving abilities, and a versatile toolkit of skills that will serve them for the rest of their lives.
Creating Pathways for Our Communities
Overcoming challenges and finding community support and guidance for students through our nonprofit changes everything. It opens doors to meaningful career paths by building educational pipelines where they are needed most. We are the pathway for students who would not ordinarily have these opportunities in the regions where they live. At the same time, we provide critical support to understaffed local hospitals and clinics, helping strengthen the entire community from the ground up.
When one door opens for a student in the foothills, it opens a pathway for the entire community to grow.
